Build a Business That Feels Like You: Why Authenticity Beats Following Every Business Rule

I don't leave the house without makeup.

Sometimes I put makeup on even when I'm not leaving the house.

Years ago, I used to meet a friend at the gym for early morning workouts, and she'd often ask:

"Are you seriously wearing makeup right now?"

I could have come up with a much more exciting explanation.

Maybe something about a late night out and leftover makeup from the night before.

But the truth is much simpler.

I like wearing makeup.

I enjoy the process. I like how it helps me feel put together, even when I'm wearing leggings, a headband, and fully expect to sweat it all off.

I don't do it because someone told me I should.

I do it because it feels like me.

Lately, I've been thinking about that same idea in relation to business.

Because building a business that feels authentic often requires separating what genuinely fits you from what you feel pressured to do.

What Comes Naturally in Your Business?

When I think about the parts of my business that feel effortless and energizing, three things immediately come to mind:

  • Creating community and facilitating meaningful conversations
  • Helping clients reduce overwhelm and break challenges into manageable next steps
  • Connecting people with opportunities and with one another

These activities don't feel forced.

They feel natural.

They're simply extensions of who I already am.

The Things I Feel Like I "Should" Be Doing

Then there are the things that seem to come with external pressure.

For me, that list includes:

  • Posting on LinkedIn more frequently
  • Scaling purely for the sake of scaling
  • Pretending I have all the answers
  • Trying to be the solution for everyone

The truth?

I don't have all the answers.

And I don't need to.

When you're the face of your business, it can feel vulnerable to admit that.

But authenticity often creates more trust than perfection ever will.

Why Authenticity Matters in Business

When your business starts reflecting who you think you should be instead of who you actually are, things become harder.

Content feels forced.

Marketing becomes exhausting.

Networking feels transactional.

Growth feels disconnected.

But when your business aligns with your natural strengths, showing up becomes significantly easier.

Not because the work disappears.

But because you're no longer fighting yourself every step of the way.

Three Ways to Lean Into What Makes You Unique

#1: Do One Thing This Week That Feels Like You

Forget what the algorithm says.

Forget what the latest business guru recommends.

Forget what everyone else in your industry appears to be doing.

Instead, choose one action that feels natural and energizing.

Examples:

  • Host a coffee chat instead of another Zoom meeting
  • Send a voice memo instead of a formal email
  • Introduce two people who should know each other
  • Record a quick thought while taking a walk
  • Write the messy first draft instead of waiting for perfection

Pay attention to what gives you energy.

Because your greatest strengths often feel so natural that you barely notice them.

#2: Ask for Feedback and Look for Patterns

Client testimonials are valuable.

But don't stop there.

Ask yourself:

  • What do people consistently come to me for?
  • What do people thank me for?
  • What do people say after working with me?

Write down recurring themes.

Not just compliments.

Patterns.

When multiple people describe you in similar ways, they're often identifying strengths you've become blind to because they come so naturally.

#3: Create Your Business Uniform

Grab a piece of paper and create two columns.

Feels Like Me

  • Conversations
  • Community
  • Brainstorming
  • Teaching
  • Connection

Feels Like Should

  • Platforms you dislike
  • Tactics you dread
  • Business rules that don't fit
  • Strategies that drain your energy

Then ask yourself:

What would happen if I spent more time building around the first list?

You don't need your business to look like someone else's.

You need it to fit you.

Build Around Your Strengths

One thing this exercise has reinforced for me is how much I enjoy creating spaces where people connect.

Community.

Conversation.

Bringing good people into the same room.

Those aren't just activities I enjoy.

They're part of who I am.

And they're a big part of how I serve my clients best.

If you're trying to build a business that feels more aligned, start by identifying what already comes naturally.

Your greatest strengths may not be the things you've worked hardest to develop.

They may be the things that feel so effortless you've been overlooking them all along.
